Electric Vehicle Charging
Your electric vehicle charging time depends on the type of charger you’re using. There are three types of
electric vehicle chargers: Level One, Level Two, and Level Three:
Level One – 120V chargers. These can be installed at home and use a standard three-prong
outlet. These chargers are perfect for drivers with short commutes and who want to recharge
their electric vehicle daily. They use less energy and do not require an electrician for installation.
Level Two – 240V chargers. These allow for faster charging at home but use more power. They
must be installed by a licensed electrician. You can also find Level Two chargers at public
charging stations.
Level Three—DC Fast Charging. This is the fastest way to charge your electric vehicle when you
are on a road trip or in an emergency situation. It is not recommended to use these regularly
because they put a lot of wear and tear on your battery. They are offered at public charging
stations and require a lot of energy to use.
Installing an Electric Vehicle Charger at Home
Installing a Level One or Level Two electric vehicle charger at home is the safest and most convenient
way to charge your vehicle. A Level One charger can plug into any standard three-prong outlet in your
garage and will not dramatically increase your energy bills. It may take 30-40 hours to fully charge an
electric vehicle from zero. A Level Two charger can be installed by a licensed electrician, and may
require changes to your electrical circuit. It uses more power but can charge an electric vehicle in 3-5
hours.
How to install a Level 2 charger at home:
You just need a licensed electrician to install it. Here are some equipment and installation
options:
